Description
The Falling Walls Global Call for Science Breakthroughs 2026 invites internationally recognised academics and leaders in Engineering & Technology to present groundbreaking work that addresses the world’s most pressing challenges. In the Engineering & Technology category, the focus is on visionary engineers, scientists, and research teams driving pioneering technological advancements that transform industries, infrastructure, and society; researchers advancing scientific and technological frontiers with the potential to address global challenges such as sustainable energy solutions, digital transformation, robotics, mobility, and smart manufacturing; and innovators who bridge theory and practice by translating complex engineering solutions into impactful, accessible, and globally applicable innovations. The initiative seeks internationally recognised and established academics and leaders in the practical application of science and mathematics to everyday life, including fields such as artificial intelligence, information technology, and mechanical engineering. It highlights individuals and teams whose work pushes the boundaries of innovation while contributing meaningfully to solving major global issues. Selected participants will have their work presented to a distinguished jury and gain international visibility. They will become part of the Falling Walls network, engaging with decision-makers, innovators, and emerging talents from around the world within an interdisciplinary community dedicated to addressing shared global challenges. The selected Science Breakthrough of the Year in Engineering & Technology will present their breakthrough work on 9 November 2026 on the main stage at the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin. As Science Breakthrough of the Year, the winner will also participate in the four-day Falling Walls Science Summit 2026, featuring inspiring keynotes, discussions, and pitches, and will engage with leading researchers and thinkers from science, politics, business, and media. Nominations may be initiated by leading academics, universities, research organisations, companies, private and public research centres, academies, research funders, foundations, and individuals. Applicants may also submit their own projects directly. All submissions must be completed in English. Projects will be evaluated based on four key selection criteria: Breakthrough Potential, Level of Innovation, Societal Relevance, and Academic Excellence. The call seeks research that represents a paradigm shift with recent ground-breaking achievements, demonstrates originality and innovation, has significant positive impact on society and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, and reflects outstanding academic quality with long-term impact on the research landscape. The research should also effectively translate complex scientific topics into accessible and engaging knowledge for broader audiences.
