Title
Description
The Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists is currently accepting grant applications to support educators and organizations to remove barriers and enable young people to conduct meaningful environmental research. The program focuses on equipping the rising generation with scientific thinking skills, supporting youth-led environmental research and data collection, overcoming barriers such as lack of equipment, transportation, mentoring, or instructional support, requiring students to produce and share environmental research through publicly available data platforms, supporting local student research symposia based on a one-day regional model, and encouraging multi-year funding and partnerships to increase project impact. YLACES offers grant funding to help educators move students beyond observation and into active environmental research. The program is designed to address practical challenges that limit students’ ability to engage in hands-on scientific inquiry. In the United States, educators may apply for grants of up to $1,500 to purchase instruments and supplies that support youth environmental research and data collection. Funded projects must involve student research activities, data sharing through public or non-proprietary platforms, and educator commitment to coaching students throughout the research process. U.S.-based environmental educators and organizations may also apply for grants of up to $5,000 to host local student research symposia. These one-day events are modeled on the GLOBE Regional Student Research Symposium framework and emphasize peer review and interaction with STEM professionals. A limited number of symposium grants will be awarded in 2026. International environmental educators and organizations are eligible to apply for funding to support instruments and supplies for youth environmental research, provided they have endorsement from the GLOBE Program in their country. YLACES also encourages proposals that seek multi-year funding, for up to a maximum of three years, and projects that involve collaboration with partner organizations. Applicants seeking extended funding are required to explain how continued support and partnerships will sustain and expand project impact, with annual reporting required for each funded year.
