Title
Description
The LMS Mathematics in Africa Grant is inviting applications to support mathematicians in organizing and participating in mathematical activities taking place within Africa. The main objectives of the scheme are to provide partial support for mathematical activities based in Africa. These activities may include attendance at mathematical conferences or workshops, the organisation of mathematical conferences or workshops, and mathematical research collaborations. Applicants who are uncertain whether their proposed activity can be supported under the scheme are encouraged to contact the LMS for guidance before submitting a proposal. The maximum funding available under the scheme is £2,000. This amount represents the upper limit rather than the standard award, and grants are awarded to meet actual expenditure related to the proposed activity. The funding may be used to cover travel, accommodation, and subsistence expenses associated with mathematical activities in Africa. The grant may also be used to cover caring costs for participants who have dependents, while visa costs are treated as part of normal travel expenses. Grant payments are made only to a university or institution and not to individual bank accounts. The award is issued in two instalments. Half of the approved amount can be claimed in advance of the activity, while the remaining balance—up to the actual expenses incurred—is paid after submission of satisfactory financial and academic reports. Any bank charges related to the transfer are covered by the society. If any portion of the grant remains unused, it must be returned and cannot be used for other purposes. The grant is designed to support mathematical initiatives that take place within Africa. Applicants may be mathematicians based anywhere in the world however, the funded activity must occur within Africa. PhD students are not eligible to apply for this grant. Conference and workshop organisers are also advised to consider diversity when planning their events. Only one grant per scheme per person is allowed during an LMS financial year, which runs from 1 August to 31 July. Applications should be submitted well in advance of the planned activity. The main application deadline is 15 May, with decisions typically communicated in June or October. Applications are not considered between mid-June and mid-October, and grants cannot be awarded retrospectively. The life of an LMS grant extends across two financial years. All awarded funds must be claimed no later than 31 July in the second year of the grant period. For example, if a grant is awarded during the 2023/24 financial year, it must be claimed by 31 July 2026. Grants that are not claimed within this period will be withdrawn. Applicants must ensure that the application form is complete and self-contained. Supporting materials such as CVs should not exceed one side of A4 and should include a list of selected recent papers. Substantial documents containing irrelevant detail or references to external websites for key information should not be included.
